Pro Blogging Tips: How to Register Domain Names

Posted By: vie

It is better to register domain names separately from the web hosting company if you start pro blogging.

When I first built my website, I didn’t know how to register domain names. I relied on the web hosting provider to register domain names for my website. It happened to be more expensive than the market price. Often, the web hosting provider is not a domain registrar but they are only a reseller. So, there is a possibility they mark up the price for domain name registration. You don’t  even know where they register your domain name. Of course, having domain name registered with your web hosting provider free you from all the work.

This time, I learned about how to register my domain names separately from web hosting provider.

Register Domain Names

Basically, it is easy to register domain names. You just choose the name and the extension, provide your personal or business information and make payment. Please don’t forget to lock the domain names so it can’t be transferred by unauthorized party and do update the Domain Name Server (DNS) pointing to your web hosting.

Transfer Domain Names

For domain transfer, the process involves 2 parties, old domain registrar and new domain registrar.  I had to go back and forth because I  missed some information and I was lack of understanding the whole process.  I needed to unlock the domain name in the old domain registrar and changed the whois information from my web hosting provider to my personal details. Then, I also needed to retrieve the authorization key.  Once the authorization key obtained, the domain transfer could start. It might take 1 to 3 days for the domain transfer to be completed.

I also came to know that we could add some features to domain names such as:

Whois Guard Privacy. All domain names registered must have the accurate personal details of the owner such as email, address and contact number. Whois Guard Privacy is to protect your privacy so  that your personal details will not be exposed to public. Instead, domain registrar contacts will replace your personal details to be visible for public.

SSL Certificates. If you are selling products on your blog or website and receive credit card payment, you may consider install SSL certificates. SSL certificate is to protect and to secure the transaction by encryption.

Encryption according to wikipedia.org is the process of transforming information (referred to as plaintext) using an algorithm (called cipher) to make it unreadable to anyone except those possessing special knowledge, usually referred to as a key. Encryption is also used to protect data in transit, for example data being transferred via networks.

You can view the payment gateway websites which apply SSL certificates such as Paypal. Paypal has a green bar prior to URL and the URL starts with https instead of http.

You can find a reliable domain registrar from Name Cheap Domain. Please note that not all domain names have the same price. It depends on the domain extensions. Dot com is the most popular choice to register domain names for your pro blogging blog. If the domain name is no longer available, you can register domain names for your pro blogging blog under dot net as the second popular choice.

Too true. I spent the majority of my internet creating on borrowed space. If your work gets any kind of authority you might find it’s not actually something that belongs to you.

Lesson learned: get your own space. Keep your own space. It’s cheap as chips nowadays, and you never know when you might have something to shout about.

Good effort to the blogger.

I too started by getting domain names from my host. I later regretted this when I wanted to transfer a site to another host. I now always keep the two seperate which gives me more control.

Thanks for posting your opinion. Well while registering domain names, we should keep it short and meaningful and try to avoid ‘dashes’ and ‘hyphens’.

I wrote about “How to be a Pro Blogger” at my blog. The link is below my comment. Do you guys think, my post is worth reading?

Thanks.
